Fine Prints:

This is an adventurous trip which involves medium-level hiking and riding on bumpy roads.  We might stay at the farmers' houses when needed which are NOT hotels and are with primitive toilet system.  Tea season is intense where the producers work around the clock to make the world's most prized teas in such a short time frame.  So a lot activities might take place very early in the morning and late in the evening.  Please consider your own health condition as well as level of tolerance prior to signing up.

We have to conduct an in-person or Skype interview once you signed up.  This is to ensure we have mutual understandings of the challenges and expectations of the trip.

Our group meet in the city of Hefei, Anhui.  Anhui is home to many of China's most famous teas and is convenient to go to other parts of China.  Specific tea regions we will visit have to depends on the tea season as primary season for each tea is very short, only 10-15 days a year and it is hard to know this far ahead of time.  These are prelim destinations which might change.

  • Suzhou - Bi Luo Chun
  • Lu An - Gua Pian, Huang Ya
  • Huang Shan - Mao Feng
  • Hang Zhou - Long Jing
  • Xishangbanna - Pu Er
  • Wu Yi Shan - Yan Cha
  • An Xi - Tie Guan Yin
  • Hefei - Anhui Agriculture University - National Key Lab of Tea Research
  • Hang Zhou - China Tea Research Institute

Regardless which regions we ended up visiting based on the actual tea season, this will be a trip where one develops intuitive understandings of tea through hands-on harvesting and processing.  Classroom style lectures will also be given periodically to ensure our knowledge of tea is comprehensive and structured.

Some of the tea regions produce very expensive teas and we ask everyone to be respectful of the farmers work and properties.  For example, if we are lucky to be there at the right time when some valuable lots or varietals are being processed (no one can predict that. Once we are in tea country, we are on tea schedule), we'll ask everyone to only observe from a distance and not cause interruption in the crafting of a $200k/barrel tea.  Please don't feel excluded.  We'll have curated experience for everyone to be hands-on.

Tea making can also be boring if you are not super into nuanced development of tea's aroma and texture in relation with temperature and moisture of a specific location and time.  Traditional tea making relies a lot on nature.  We wait on tea A LOT.

Chinese people smoke a lot.  Tea farmers smoke even more.  Please don't take offense when many places do not have a non-smoking environment.

Cities and modern tea facilities will be much better accommodated. We'll make sure to have a good mix of all aspect of tea and China to give everyone a comprehensive understanding of tea.

Everyone must have international insurance.

Please get your Chinese visa as early as possible.
